Polka dot nails come down to one movement: touch a ball-tipped tool to the nail and lift it straight off. Gel makes them forgiving, because the dots stay wet until they're cured. After the glitter of the festive season, they're a light, playful way to start the year.

This guide covers the dotting technique, then ten polka dot nail designs and tips for short nails and beginners.

How to do polka dots on nails with gel

Dotting tools for nail art: which size to use

A dotting tool has a metal ball at each end, usually in two sizes. The ball sets the size of the dot, from pinhead-sized micro dots to bold polka dots, and pressing harder only squashes it. Our guide to nail art brushes and tools covers the rest of the kit.

Which gel to use for dot nail art

Each dot has to cover the base in one touch. An opaque black such as 001 Black does, as do most deep shades. For white dots, use an opaque white gel polish or gel paint, a thicker gel for nail art that keeps a crisp edge. Sheer and milky whites let the base show through, turning grey on black and pink on red.

How to do dots on nails, step by step

  1. Paint the base. After prep, apply a base coat and two thin coats of colour, capping the free edge and curing each layer for the time in your gel's instructions. Leave any sticky layer on the colour to help the dots grip.
  2. Make a palette. Put a drop of the dot colour on foil, away from the lamp and sunlight, and dip from there, never from the bottle.
  3. Dip and dot. Dip just the ball, to the same depth each time. Hold the tool upright, touch the nail once and lift straight off without pressing or dragging. An overloaded ball leaves a thick dot that can wrinkle under the lamp.
  4. Re-dip before every dot so they all match. For graduated dots, step down a ball size with each dot, still dipping once per dot.
  5. Wipe the ball every few dots, as built-up gel makes them grow. Between colours, clean it with a lint-free wipe dampened with gel cleanser.
  6. Cure every two or three nails. Uncured dots slowly flatten and spread, so never dot a whole hand before curing.
  7. Seal the dots. Brush on a thin layer of Diamond Top Coat, a no-wipe, high-shine top coat, cap the free edge and cure. If you can still feel the dots, add a second thin coat.

How to space polka dots evenly

Classic polka dots sit in a staggered grid. Dot a row down the centre first, one to two dot-widths apart, then a row on each side, each dot level with a gap in the centre row. Keep the size and spacing the same on every nail and let the number vary, as a thumb takes more dots than a little finger.

Keep every dot a hairline from the cuticle and sidewalls, leaving a gap where a side row runs out of room: uncured gel on skin is the main cause of gel allergy.

10 polka dot nail designs

1. Black and white polka dot nails

White dots on black give the strongest contrast. Over two thin coats of Black, place medium dots of opaque white in a staggered grid. Use a clean ball, as any trace of black on it turns the white grey. Our black nail designs cover other ways to wear a black base.

For black dots on white, dot Black over two thin coats of 021 Cloud. This milky white is too sheer for crisp white dots, but as a base it tones the contrast down for the office. Keep the brush well loaded so it glides, as milky shades streak when it drags.

2. White dots on nude nails

From across a desk, tiny dots of opaque white scattered over a light nude such as 017 Silk read as a fine texture. Build Silk in two or three thin coats, as pale nudes can streak. Re-dip for every dot with the smallest ball, since any size difference shows on micro dots.

3. Red and white polka dot nails

Red with white dots recalls 1950s summer dresses and suits Valentine's Day. For the red, use B021 Rouge Capucine, a vibrant red builder gel that also strengthens the nail. Cure a thin first layer, then shape a slight apex with the second and cure again before dotting. Builder gel is filed rather than soaked off, so at each infill, file back the top coat and dots, fill the regrowth in red and dot again.

4. Blue and white polka dot nails

Blue and white is the nautical pairing, as good with a winter coat as with summer denim. Dot white over two thin coats of 113 Sapphire, a deep blue. On the ring fingers, reverse the colours, with Sapphire dots on Cloud.

5. Gold polka dot nails

On black, gold dots suit evenings out, and on Silk they pick up gold rings at the office. Stir a metallic gold gel paint before dipping, as the pigment settles and the first dots can come out pale. For more gold, make one accent nail per hand in B030 Or Solaire, a builder gel with golden reflections. Leave it plain, as builder gel is too thick for dots.

6. Dots at the cuticle

A curved row of tiny black dots along the cuticle frames a Silk or Cloud nail. Place the centre dot first, a hairline above the skin, then work outwards at the same distance. As the design draws the eye to the cuticle, regrowth shows sooner.

7. Polka dot French tips

A dotted French is easier than a freehand smile line. Over Silk, dot the centre and both ends of the smile line in white, Sapphire or Black, then fill the gaps evenly. One row makes a micro French, and a second row of smaller dots, set in the gaps, deepens the tip.

8. Graduated dot nails

Graduated dots shrink from the cuticle to the tip, so line up three or four ball sizes from a set of dotting tools. Place the largest dot just above the cuticle, then step down a size for each dot, dipping once per dot. Repeat the same sequence on every nail. In Black on Silk, a single row lengthens short nails.

9. Confetti polka dots in pastels

Confetti dots scatter three or four pastels at random. Test each pastel on a tip first, as some are too sheer to cover in one dot. Over a Cloud base, place the largest dots first and fill the gaps with smaller ones, wiping the ball between colours. Keep uncured dots apart so the colours can't bleed, and cure each nail as you finish it.

10. Dots and fine lines

A fine line adds a graphic edge and doubles as a guide. On a Cloud base, pull a thin line of Black towards you with a liner brush, from just short of the cuticle to the tip. Set it slightly off-centre, so a small drift doesn't show, and cure it. Then place a column of small dots alongside, a dot's width away. The line takes practice.

Short polka dot nails

On short nails, keep to the small and medium balls and leave plenty of base colour showing, as large dots crowd them. Vertical rows and graduated dots lengthen the nail, and a dotted French should stay at one row, as a deeper band shortens it. Dots sit best on round or oval nails filed to an even length.

Simple polka dot nails: tips for beginners

  • Practise on a plastic nail tip. You'll see how much gel the ball holds and how far a dot spreads.
  • Fix mistakes before curing. A stray dot wipes off with a fine brush dipped in cleanser.
  • Choose a random pattern for your dominant hand. Painted with your other hand, a confetti scatter hides uneven spacing that a grid would show.
  • Watch for skin reactions. If redness, itching, swelling or blisters appear around your nails, stop using the product and see a doctor.

Once dots feel easy, our simple nail designs for beginners turn them into hearts, daisies and smiley faces.

Frequently asked questions

Are polka dot nails still trendy?

Yes. Polka dots are a recurring fashion print, and on nails the most current versions are small and sparse: micro dots on nude, a cuticle row or dotted French tips.

How do you do polka dots on nails?

Paint and cure a base colour, then dip a dotting tool in opaque gel and touch it to the nail without pressing. Re-dip for every dot, cure every two or three nails and seal with top coat.

What can I use for polka dots on my nails?

A dotting tool is easiest, with ball tips in several sizes. Without one, a toothpick makes tiny dots, and a hairgrip or a round-headed pin pushed into a pencil eraser makes medium ones. For the colour, choose an opaque gel polish or gel paint.

What are some unique polka dot nail ideas?

Unique ideas include one bold dot per nail, a different colour pairing on each finger and white dots over a velvet cat eye base. Our guide to 30 gel nail art ideas has more techniques to combine with dots.

Start with Black and Silk from our gel polish collection, adding red or gold from our builder gel range for extra strength.
