Gel polish, also called gel nail polish or soak-off gel (shellac nails, after the CND brand), is a polish that cures under a UV/LED lamp and wears for up to three weeks without chipping, where regular polish flakes within days. Gel polish, builder gel or acrylic: which one do you need?
Gel polish adds color in a thin coat on the natural nail and comes off at removal, with acetone. Builder gel is denser: it overlays, builds the apex and allows extensions, and it files off. Acrylic is a monomer-and-powder system with its own odor and removal. For a color manicure that lasts three weeks, gel polish is enough; on weak or thin nails, pair it with a rubber base; on acrylic or builder gel enhancements, gel polish goes on top as the color layer.
Applying and removing gel polish: lamp, remover, no peeling
Application takes four steps: nail prep (cuticles pushed back, surface buffed, dehydrated, primer if needed), a thin layer of base coat cured under the lamp, one or two coats of color cured for 30 seconds under LED, then a top coat for shine and protection. Gel polish with UV light or LED light is the only kind that cures: a "no-UV gel polish" is regular polish. Removal uses acetone, the gel polish remover of reference, in wraps or by soaking after filing the top coat; never peel gel polish off the nail, that is what damages it. A cordless nail drill speeds up prep and removal in the salon.

Frequently asked questions about gel polish
How long does gel polish last?
Up to three weeks without chipping when applied on a well-prepped nail, with a base coat and a top coat, every layer cured under the lamp. Nail growth, more than wear, decides when it is time for removal.
How do you remove gel polish without damaging your nails?
Lightly file the top coat to break the shine, then let acetone work for ten to fifteen minutes in removal wraps or by soaking. The polish lifts and comes off with a cuticle pusher, without forcing. Never scrape and never peel gel polish off: peeling is what damages the nail, not the product. Finish with cuticle oil.
Is gel polish banned in Europe?
No. What the European Union banned on September 1, 2025 is TPO, a photoinitiator found in many gels and gel polishes. Elegelli gel polish is formulated without TPO and without HEMA and notified to the EU cosmetics portal: it is compliant in Europe and legal to use everywhere else.
Do you need a UV or LED lamp for gel polish?
Yes. Gel polish does not dry in the air: every layer cures under a UV or LED lamp, at least 30 seconds under LED or as your lamp settings indicate. A "no-light gel polish" is regular polish without the wear of a gel.
Can you use gel polish on toes for a gel pedicure?
Yes, with the same protocol as for the hands: prep, base coat, color, top coat, curing under the lamp at every layer. A gel pedicure lasts for weeks and is removed with acetone, as on the hands.
Is gel polish safe for your nails, and what about allergies?
Gel polish is safe when applied and removed properly: what weakens the nail is peeling, over-filing or a rushed removal. The allergy question is about the formula. HEMA is the monomer most often involved in contact allergies to gels, and Elegelli formulas contain none, nor any TPO. Prep without thinning the nail, remove with acetone without scraping, and oil the cuticles between sets; on weakened nails, a rubber base overlays and protects them.
