Wedding Nails: 8 Bridal Nail Ideas and 6 Colours for Wedding Guests
Milky pink, ivory pearl or a single crystal: eight bridal nail ideas made for ring close-ups, when to book the trial and final manicure, and six colours for wedding guests.

The best wedding nails are glossy, evenly shaped and in a shade that suits the outfit and the rings. Milky pink, a light nude, ivory and champagne are the safest bridal shades, while guests can take their colour from their outfit and the season.
Below are eight bridal nail ideas, a timeline for the bride and six colours for wedding guests.
Bridal nails are photographed in close-up as you exchange rings and hold the bouquet, often with a macro lens. Check these four points before choosing from the wedding nail designs below.

Milky pink hides white spots and an uneven nail bed, yet still passes for natural nails in photos. Build the structure in B009 Rose Ballerine, a ballerina pink builder gel. Cure a thin first layer, then float a bead over the nail so it levels into a gentle apex, and cure again.
For a milkier pink, cure one very thin layer of B003 Milky White over the pink before the top coat. This pink-leaning milky shade flatters fair skin, while on olive and deep skin a milky beige sits more naturally. Our milky nails guide covers the all-white version.
A light nude on almond nails is the most discreet bridal manicure, and the tapered shape lengthens the fingers. On fair and medium skin, wear 017 Silk, a nude with a pale pink cast; olive and deep skin need a warmer, beige nude.
Pale shades streak under a dry brush, so load enough gel to glide and build two or three thin coats, curing each. An almond needs a few millimetres of free edge, so start growing short nails a couple of months before the wedding.
A milky French swaps the usual pink base for a translucent white, so the contrast with the tip is gentler. Build the nails in Milky White, then paint the tip in white gel polish with a long liner brush.
On short nails, keep the tip under two millimetres deep, as a deeper tip makes them seem shorter. An opaque white stands out against the milky base; apply it in two thin coats, capping the free edge and curing each. Our French manicure guide shows how to draw an even smile line.
In a baby boomer, pink at the cuticle fades into white at the tip. With no line to keep straight, it's the most forgiving French in close-ups, though it needs some length for the fade to show.
Over cured Rose Ballerine, dab white gel polish onto the tip half with a make-up sponge, pressing more lightly towards the middle. Clean any gel off the skin and cure, then repeat over a shorter area to whiten the tip. Finish with top coat, capping the free edge, and add a second if the sponge texture still shows.
Ivory nails match a cream or ivory dress, and pearl powder gives them a shell-like sheen. For the colour, use B011 Crème d'Ivoire, an ivory cream builder gel.
Over the cured colour, apply and cure Diamond Top Coat, whose no-wipe surface lets the powder buff flat. Rub in a little white pearl powder with a silicone applicator and brush the excess off the sidewalls. Seal with a second layer of Diamond Top Coat, capping the free edge, and cure.

Halfway between pink, beige and gold, champagne flatters most skin tones and goes with blush or champagne dresses and yellow gold rings. Build the colour in B035 Champagne, a rose champagne builder gel, as you would the milky pink.
For the sheen, follow the pearl chrome steps above with a gold or champagne pearl powder. One light pass gives a faint glow in daylight, while more passes give a brighter finish for the evening.

A half pearl or small crystal near the base of one or two nails is enough for a bride. Pearls have a satin finish for daytime, while crystals sparkle under evening lights. On the middle fingers, they leave the focus on the engagement ring.
On the cured colour, press the stone into a small bead of clear builder gel, at least a millimetre from the cuticle, clean around it and cure. Lace and veils catch on raised edges, so seal the base with a fine line of top coat, keeping it off a crystal's facets. Then top coat the nail and cure. Our guide to nail gems that stay on explains the cotton pad test for the seal.
Fine white lines can echo the lace of a dress if you keep them to a scalloped edge on two accent nails. Paint them over a nude or pink base, as white lace barely shows on Milky White.
White liner gel holds a fine line better than self-levelling gel polish. With a detail brush, paint small arches along the free edge, add a dot where each pair meets and cure straight away, before the lines spread. Even scallops take practice, so try them on a spare tip first.
Plan a trial about a month before the wedding and the final manicure two or three days ahead.
As a guest, match your nails to your outfit, jewellery and the season, and keep to one detail per hand. Avoid an all-white or ivory set with pearls, which can pass for bridal nails in photos. Bridesmaids should ask the bride first, as she may want them all in the same shade.
Dusty rose, a pink muted with grey or brown, is easy to wear at a daytime ceremony. It pairs with blush, lilac, grey and navy outfits, and the browner versions flatter olive and deep skin. Muted pinks show brush marks, so let each thin coat settle for a few seconds before curing.
Sage green ties in with the greenery of a garden or country wedding in spring or summer. Our 188 Sage is a deep sage green that works with cream, lilac or floral outfits and gold jewellery. If a full set feels too strong, paint a narrow sage French tip over two coats of Silk.
Navy is dark without the severity of black, so it suits evening and winter weddings, especially with silver or white gold jewellery. If you want more colour, 113 Sapphire is a saturated gemstone blue, brighter than navy. Clean any colour off the skin before curing, as a blue mark at the cuticle shows in every photo.
At a winter wedding, burgundy sits well with velvet, dark green or navy outfits and gold jewellery. Dark pigments let less lamp light through, so build B014 Amarante, a deep bordeaux builder gel, in thin layers and cure each one fully. Regrowth shows more on a dark shade, so book the manicure close to the date.
The boldest colour here is 004 Coral Pink, a vibrant shade for outdoor summer weddings and tanned skin. Wear it with yellow, turquoise, navy or floral outfits. To tone it down, paint only the ring fingers and wear Silk on the others.
A nude with a little gold goes with any outfit and picks up gold jewellery. On one or two nails, press a few gold leaf flakes into uncured top coat over Silk, using tweezers rather than a fingertip, and cure.
Seal the crinkly flakes under one or two more coats of Diamond Top Coat, curing each, until the nail feels smooth. Our classy nail designs for work and weddings include a simpler gold line.
Two or three days ahead, so the cuticle line is fresh in the photos and there's time to fix a lifted corner. Brides should also book a trial about a month before.
Gel nails with a high-shine top coat suit most weddings, filed to a short or medium oval or almond. Builder gel strengthens nails that bend or break and is removed by filing, while soak-off gel polish is enough for strong nails and can be soaked or filed off.
For a bride, the safest colours are milky pink, a light nude, ivory or champagne, chosen to match the dress. Guests can follow their outfit or the season, with dusty rose, sage or coral in spring and summer and burgundy or navy in winter.
No colour is banned, but guests should avoid an all-white or ivory manicure with pearls, which can pass for bridal nails. Neon shades and busy nail art can seem out of place at a formal ceremony. If the couple has chosen a colour scheme, follow it.
