Long nails make the fingers seem longer and slimmer, and they leave room for designs that would crowd a short nail, such as a deep French tip.

Below, we compare growing your own nails with extensions, explain what keeps them strong and share 12 long nail designs to recreate.

How to get long nails: grow your own or wear extensions

Grow your own if your nails are healthy and you can wait: they grow about three and a half millimetres a month. Choose extensions if your nails break before reaching the length you want or you need it by a set date, such as a wedding.

How to grow long nails under gel

A thin gel overlay stops the free edge peeling or snapping as it grows. Nails that bend easily need a flexible layer such as RB01 Rubber Base Transparent. Firmer nails that break past the fingertip need builder gel, and our guide to strengthening natural nails compares the two. A coloured builder such as B010 Beige Trench, a warm beige, also evens out the nail's colour.

Keep the gel a hairline from the cuticle and cap the free edge with every layer. Infill the regrowth rather than removing the overlay, and never peel gel off, as it takes layers of nail with it.

Nail extensions: builder gel on forms or soft gel tips

For sculpted extensions, fit a paper or reusable form snugly under the free edge, build the extra length on it in builder gel, then overlay the whole nail. Once cured, remove the form and file the shape. Sculpting takes practice, so start at a medium length; our guide to gel nail extensions on forms shows each stage.

Soft gel tips are ready-shaped, full-cover tips of soak-off gel, fixed with gel and cured. They're quicker than sculpting, but you're limited to the shapes in the box. Each tip must match the nail's width, because one that touches the skin will lift.

For both, remove the cuticle from the nail plate, buff lightly, cleanse and dehydrate, and use Acid-Free Primer on oily nails or nails that tend to lift. To take them off, file builder gel down to a thin layer over your own nail, and soak soft gel tips off in acetone; both methods are covered in our builder gel vs hard gel guide.

How to keep long nails strong: the apex and the stress area

Long nails usually break at the stress area, where the nail leaves the finger or, on an extension, where your own nail meets the added length. Every knock on the tip pushes on this zone like a lever, so the gel is built thickest over it. Seen from the side, a balanced nail rises gently from the cuticle to this highest point, the apex, then slopes down to a thin free edge.

Length should also stay in proportion to the nail bed, the pink part attached to the finger, as a short nail bed can't anchor much length. As a starting point, keep the free edge no longer than the nail bed, and leave extra long nails to sculpted extensions.

Best shapes for long nails

Whatever the shape, keep the sidewalls straight up to the stress area, because narrowing them there weakens the nail. Our nail shapes guide shows how to file each one.

  • Almond. With no corners to catch, it's the strongest tapered shape, and our almond nail designs run from short to long.
  • Coffin or ballerina. The flat tip takes knocks better than a point, but the tapered sides rely on a well-placed apex.
  • Stiletto. The boldest long shape is also the most fragile, so it's best worn as an extension.
  • Long square. The full-width tip is strong and suits French and chrome tips, but round the corners slightly so they don't catch.

12 long nail designs and how to do them

Cure each thin layer under a UV/LED lamp for the time in your gel's instructions. Clean any gel off the skin before curing, as uncured gel on skin is the main cause of gel allergy. Finish every design with Diamond Top Coat, a no-wipe, high-shine top coat, wrapped over the free edge.

1. Long French tip nails

A long almond has room for a deep French curve, with the white running well down the sides so the nail bed looks longer. Over cured B009 Rose Ballerine, a ballet-pink builder gel, paint the tip in white gel polish with a fine liner brush. Two thin coats work best: one thin coat streaks, and one thick coat wrinkles.

2. Long almond nails in milky white

Milky white is the easiest long set to wear daily because it blurs regrowth and the line where an extension begins. Build every layer in B003 Milky White, or in Rose Ballerine with a thin final layer of Milky White for a pinker milk. Keep the apex smooth: milky gel turns whiter wherever it's thicker.

3. Long nude coffin nails

A nude close to your skin tone makes a long coffin appear slimmer still. Beige Trench suits warm undertones and gold jewellery, and Rose Ballerine flatters fair skin with pink undertones. A flat tip shows any difference in length, so even up all ten nails before shaping the taper.

4. Long black stiletto nails

Sculpt black stilettos with a firm C-curve, the arch you see when looking down the nail from its tip, to stop the point bending. Build them in thin layers of B024 Noir Épi, a deep black builder gel, as black pigment blocks the lamp's light and a thick layer may not cure through.

5. Long square nails with chrome tips

Cure a layer of Diamond Top Coat over a nude base, then rub silver or gold chrome powder onto the tip only with a small silicone applicator. Brush off the excess, check the corners for bare patches and seal with a second layer of top coat over the free edge.

6. Long ballerina nails with a baby boomer fade

A baby boomer fades from pink at the cuticle to white at the tip, and a long ballerina gives the gradient room. On cured Rose Ballerine, sponge white gel polish onto the outer two thirds of the nail, clean the skin and cure. Repeat twice over smaller areas so the white builds up at the free edge, then blur the steps with a thin layer of Milky White.

7. Long almond cat eye nails

Cat eye shimmer travels along a long almond as you turn your hand. Apply a thin coat of 001 Golden Veil, a gold magnetic gel polish, over a cured nude or black base. For a velvet finish, circle the magnet above the uncured gel, cure straight away and repeat with a second coat. For a single beam, hold the magnet still and close for a few seconds before curing.

8. Long red nails

Red is a favourite for winter weddings and evenings out. Build the overlay in two thin layers of B021 Rouge Capucine, a vibrant red builder gel, then refine the shape with a fine file. Glossy red shows every dip: before the top coat, check that a light's reflection runs unbroken from cuticle to tip.

9. Long nails with 3D droplets

3D droplets are small domes of clear gel, like drops of water. Place them on the cured colour with a dotting tool, using a thick clear gel that holds its shape, and cure each nail before the drops spread. Keep them to one or two accent nails, away from the free edge, where they would catch on knitwear.

10. Long nails with gems

For weddings and parties, a long nail can hold a small cluster of rhinestones without crowding. Set each stone in a bead of clear builder gel near the cuticle, where it takes fewer knocks, and cure. Run top coat around the stones but not over their faceted tops, which it would dull.

11. Long aura nails

An aura is a blurred glow of colour in the centre of the nail, best stretched into an oval on long nails. Dab gel polish into the centre of a cured nude with a small sponge or fluffy brush, then cure and repeat until the glow is strong enough. A deeper pink over Rose Ballerine is the easiest blend for a first attempt.

12. Long glitter fade nails

Keeping the glitter at the tip leaves the cuticle area clear, so regrowth barely shows. Paint glitter gel polish on the outer third of the nail, then wipe the brush and pull the leftover particles towards the centre. Cure, add a second layer at the very tip, and seal with two layers of top coat if one still feels rough. For New Year's Eve, cover the ring-finger nails in B033 Argent Sterling, a metallic silver builder gel.

Living with long nails: typing, contact lenses and infills

These habits help long nails last.

  • Typing. Press the keys with the pads of your fingers, held a little flatter than usual, as tapping with the tips knocks the stress area.
  • Contact lenses. Balance the lens on the pad of your index finger with the nail pointing away from the eye, and remove it with the pads of your thumb and finger.
  • Tools. Open cans, peel labels and scrape off stickers with a coin or a key, and wear gloves for cleaning and washing up.
  • Infills. As the nail grows, the apex drifts forward and the tip gets heavier. Every three to four weeks, infill the regrowth and move the apex back.
  • Capping. If you file a nail shorter between infills, seal the new edge with a thin layer of top coat and cure it.

Frequently asked questions

What nail length is most flattering?

A free edge between half and the full length of the nail bed flatters most hands. It lengthens the fingers without unbalancing the nail, especially in an almond or oval shape.

What are long nails called?

There's no special name: salons say short, medium, long or extra long, plus the shape. Long artificial nails are called extensions, whether made of gel or acrylic.

Is it good to have long nails?

Yes, if your nails are healthy, strong enough not to tear and kept clean underneath with a nail brush. Some jobs, such as healthcare and food preparation, usually require short nails without extensions.

Which nail shape is strongest for long nails?

Oval and almond are the strongest, because their rounded tips have no corners to catch. A stiletto's narrow point breaks most easily.
