3D Nail Art: How to Make Droplets, Swirls and Flowers with Builder Gel

Droplets, swirls and flowers you can feel with a fingertip: how to sculpt raised designs in builder gel, cure them in stages and keep them from catching on hair and clothes.

3D nail art, also called raised nail art, is any design that stands up from the nail, usually sculpted in thick gel or acrylic. Water droplets, swirls and small flowers are within reach at home with a builder gel, a detail brush and some practice.

This guide covers which gel to use, three step-by-step techniques, six more designs, and how to stop raised details catching and remove them safely.

Which gel to use for 3D nail art

Gel polish is too fluid for raised work and settles flat within moments. Builder gel is thick enough to hold a droplet, dome or rounded line until it goes under the lamp. It still levels slowly, though, so its shapes come out rounded and slightly puffy.

For fine detail, such as veined petals, ribbon folds or crisp lines, dedicated 3D or sculpting gels work better. They're stiffer and barely level, so they hold the marks of a brush or tool until cured. Builder gel is enough for every raised shape in this guide.

How to do 3D nail art, step by step

Prep and paint the nails as usual, in thin coats, capping the free edge and curing each coat. The 3D details go on the last cured colour layer, before the top coat, so they bond to it. On a finished manicure, buff the spot lightly first, as gel grips poorly on cured no-wipe top coat.

Work with a little gel at a time, shaping it with a brush dipped in gel cleanser and blotted on a lint-free wipe. Slightly damp, the brush glides without sticking, while a wet one thins the gel and the shape slumps before you can cure it. Warm gel slumps too, so keep it away from the lamp and radiators.

Build height in thin stages, curing each one for the time given in your gel and lamp instructions. A thick blob can wrinkle, cause a heat spike or stay soft underneath. Keep raised shapes a millimetre clear of the cuticle and well back from the free edge, which takes the most knocks. Clean any gel off the skin before curing: it causes lifting, and uncured gel on skin is the main cause of gel allergy.

Water droplet nails

Water droplets are the easiest place to start, as builder gel rounds into a dome by itself. Over a sheer nude they look like raindrops on a bare nail, while black or deep red makes their shine stand out.

  1. Place the drops. With a dotting tool, pick up a bead of B025 Poussière De Diamant, a transparent builder gel with a subtle shimmer, touch it to the nail and lift straight up. Make three to five drops per nail in mixed sizes, scattered unevenly.
  2. Add a few tails. Pull a damp liner brush out from one side of some drops to turn them into teardrops. Cure each nail straight away, as drops left waiting spread and lose height.
  3. Seal and finish. With a clean liner brush, trace a little Diamond Top Coat, a no-wipe, high-shine top coat, around the base of each drop. Then glide a thin layer over the whole nail with very little on the brush, so it doesn't pool, cap the free edge and cure.

3D swirl nails

A raised swirl in B033 Argent Sterling, a metallic silver builder gel, resembles a strand of silver wire over a sheer nude. Done in clear builder gel, a swirl takes the colour of the nail beneath and shows only where light catches it, so wobbles are hard to spot.

  1. Lay the line. Begin with a comma or C-shaped curve near the cuticle, which is easier to control than a long S. Set a bead of gel at one end and lead it along the curve with the tip of a damp detail brush. Barely touch the nail, so the gel stays raised and rounded, and cure each curve before starting the next.
  2. Build height. Trace a slimmer line along the top of the cured one and cure again, keeping metallic gel thin, as light passes through it less easily.
  3. Seal and finish as for the droplets, tracing top coat along both sides of the line first.

3D flower nails

3D flower nails take the most practice, because uncured petals merge if they touch. Build the nails first in B003 Milky White, following our guide on how to use builder gel. Frosted white petals on this milky base suit a winter wedding as well as the office.

  1. Plan the flower. Choose a spot between the cuticle and the centre of the nail, clear of the sidewalls, and make the flower no wider than half the nail.
  2. Shape a petal. Place a bead of B027 Blanc Meije, a frosted white builder gel, where the petal's outer edge will be. Press a damp detail brush flat on it and draw it towards the centre, so the petal is full at the edge and narrow in the middle.
  3. Repeat until you have five petals, curing each one before making its neighbour so they stay separate.
  4. Add the centre. Set a tiny bead of Poussière De Diamant where the petals meet, or press a half pearl into it, then cure, seal and finish as for the droplets.

3D nail designs to try

On everyday nails, limit 3D details to one or two accent nails.

Raised French tip nails

A raised French manicure traces the smile line of a flat white tip in builder gel: Blanc Meije for a frosted edge, Argent Sterling for evenings. Once the tip is cured, lead a fine bead of gel along the line with a damp liner brush, a third at a time, curing each section before it spreads. Back from the free edge, the line escapes most knocks, but on short nails it sits too close to the edge to last.

Chrome droplet nails

Chrome droplets give a silver chrome nail a raised, liquid-metal texture. Over cured black gel polish, place and cure irregular drops of builder gel, then apply and cure a light coat of Diamond Top Coat. Rub silver chrome powder over everything, working it around each drop with a pointed silicone tool. Seal with another layer of top coat, capping the free edge, as our guide to applying chrome powder explains.

Puffy bubble nails

Puffy nails are 3D designs built from round, inflated shapes, and bubble nails are among the simplest. Over a sheer or jelly colour, place a cluster of clear domes, largest first, and cure before filling the gaps with tiny ones. A narrow crescent of white gel polish on the same side of a few domes turns them into bubbles.

3D bow nails

Shape a bow's two loops like the flower petals, as teardrops pointing out from a centre. Cure them, then add a bead for the knot and two short tails that stop well before the free edge. A Milky White bow on each ring finger, over a pale pink, is plenty.

3D pearl nails

Flat-back half pearls are set like rhinestones: pressed into a bead of builder gel, cured and sealed around the base, as our guide to applying nail gems shows. For pearls that sit lower and catch less, dot tiny domes of Milky White and cure them, then apply and cure Diamond Top Coat. Rub pearl powder onto the domes with a small silicone tool, or over the whole nail for a glazed finish, then seal with top coat.

Tiny 3D designs for short nails

Scale everything down on nails kept short for typing, cooking or sport. Use one or two droplets, a micro flower or a single silver dot, all in the half nearest the cuticle.

How to keep 3D nails from catching

Raised details catch on hair as you tie it back, on knitwear and tights, and on the lining of coat pockets. Small, low shapes snag least, so save tall sculptures for an event and put large pieces on the ring and middle fingers.

Run each finished nail over old tights. If a fibre catches, lightly buff the rough spot, trace a little top coat over it and cure.

How to remove 3D nail art

File the raised parts flush with the manicure first, then remove the gel as usual: builder gel by filing, soak-off colour by soaking or filing. Never prise a detail off, as it can pull up the gel beneath and tear away layers of the natural nail. Our guide to removing gel and builder gel with an e-file explains when to stop filing.

Frequently asked questions

Are 3D gel nails better than acrylic?

For raised details, gel is easier to learn. It stays workable until cured, so you can reshape a petal until it looks right. Acrylic starts to set as soon as liquid and powder are mixed, so sculpting it takes a practised hand. Gel also has a much milder smell.

Is 3D nail gel damaging to nails?

Not in itself. The raised parts sit on cured gel, never on the natural nail, so the risks are the usual ones: heavy filing during prep, peeling gel off and rushed removal. A large piece that catches can also lever the gel away from the nail.

How long do 3D nails last?

A 3D design can last as long as the manicure underneath, often two to three weeks, though wear varies from person to person. Small details, sealed edges and a clear tip give it the best chance. Tall pieces tend to chip or catch first, especially on the thumbs.

Why can't you touch 3D nail gel?

Because it stays uncured until it goes under the lamp, and repeated skin contact with uncured gel can cause an allergy. Shape it with a brush or tool, even if it feels like modelling clay, and don't touch the sticky layer some gels leave after curing. If you notice redness, itching, swelling or blisters around your nails, stop using gel and see a doctor or dermatologist, as our guide to gel nail allergy explains.
