Flower Nail Designs: How to Paint Flowers with Gel, Plus 15 Ideas
Dot daisies, brush-stroke petals and line-art outlines sit behind most floral nail art. Learn all three in gel, then try 15 designs, from sunflowers to pressed flowers.

Most flower nail designs rely on three techniques: dot daisies, brush-stroke petals and line-art outlines. Once you can paint those in gel, nearly every design below comes down to colour, size and placement.
The techniques come first, then 15 floral nail designs, from daisies to pressed and 3D flowers.
Paint flower nail art over a cured base coat and colour, using opaque gel polish or gel paint, a thicker gel that keeps a crisp edge. Work from a drop on foil, away from the lamp, and keep any sticky layer on the colour, which helps details grip.
Uncured details slowly spread, so cure each nail as you finish it, following your gel and lamp instructions. Clean any gel off the skin before curing, as uncured gel on skin is the main cause of gel allergy. If redness, itching, swelling or blisters appear around the nails, stop using the product and see a doctor.
Brush strokes make the teardrop petals of blossoms, sunflowers and leaves. Use a round detail brush with a fine point, which our guide to nail art brushes and tools helps you choose. Touch the tip down at the petal's outer edge, press so the bristles spread, then pull towards the centre while lifting, so the stroke tapers to a point.
Turn your finger rather than the brush, so every stroke runs towards you. Leave a hairline gap between petals, or cure each one before painting its neighbour, so they don't merge.
Line-art flowers are outlines, usually black on a pale base, drawn with a short liner that bends less than a long striper. Load it lightly, wiping off the excess on the foil so no bead hangs from the tip, and brace your little finger against your other hand.
Pull every stroke towards you, drawing the flower head first and curing it before the stem and leaf. Small gaps in an outline read as deliberate, while going back over a wet line only thickens it.
White daisies on a pale nude suit the office, and regrowth barely shows. Build 017 Silk, a light silky nude, in two or three thin, even coats, as uneven coats streak on a pale nude. Place one daisy per nail, at a different height on each finger. On deep skin, pick a nude nearer your own tone.

For spring and Easter, alternate 022 Lilac, a lavender-toned pastel, with 109 Sky, an airy light blue, and add one or two white daisies per nail. Both suit cool undertones and silver jewellery. Honey centres stand out most on Lilac, since yellow and purple are opposites on the colour wheel. For an even base, see our guide to painting pastel nails without streaks.
Sunflowers belong to the daisy family, and on nails they're large daisies with pointed petals. Over Sky, paint a round centre in 001 Black, an opaque black, and cure. Reverse the brush stroke for the Honey petals, pressing at the edge of the centre and lifting outwards, then cure and fill the gaps with a second ring. Yellow gels tend to be sheer, and blue showing through turns them greenish, so recoat any patchy petal after curing.

A blossom on each ring finger lets you practise brush-stroke petals on two nails instead of ten. Build all ten nails in B009 Rose Ballerine, a ballerina pink builder gel that strengthens weak nails and is removed by filing, not soaking. On the ring fingers, paint five white petals off-centre, with three pinhead dots of Black in the middle for stamens.
Cherry blossom on a milky base is a design for March and April. Over two or three thin coats of 021 Cloud, a sheer milky white, draw a crooked Black branch with the liner and cure. Cherry petals are notched, so make each from two touching dots of a mid-pink gel polish, dragged inwards to a point like a tiny heart. Group five into each blossom along the branch, cure, then add Honey centres.
Forget-me-nots, sky blue with a yellow eye, can be a bride's 'something blue'. On Cloud or Silk, dot a cluster of three flowers near the cuticle, each made of five tiny Sky dots from the small ball, and cure. Add a pinpoint of Honey to each centre. If a Sky petal looks sheer, dot over it again after curing.
A lavender sprig runs lengthways, so it suits short nails too. On Cloud, draw a slanting stem in a sage green gel polish, or in Black for a graphic version, and cure. Add Lilac buds as tiny press-and-lift strokes angled upwards in pairs, smaller towards the tip, then cure.
Tulips make a good first outline, since the cup is little more than a U with a pointed petal rising from it. Draw it in Black over Cloud or Silk, cure, then add a long stem and one curving leaf. For a looser version, outline a cured patch of Lilac slightly off its edge, which disguises wobbles.
Wildflower nails, a relaxed design for summer weekends, show a small meadow rising from the free edge. Over Silk, draw three to five fine sage green stems of different heights up from the tip, and cure. Top each with a different flower, such as a daisy, a Sky forget-me-not or Lilac buds, curing after each colour so none bleed together. On short nails, two stems are enough.
Short nails need small flowers with plenty of base colour around them. A micro daisy just above the cuticle stays neat, though regrowth shows there sooner. Lengthways motifs make the nail seem longer, while a band of flowers across it shortens it. If yours split before reaching the fingertip, add a thin layer of Rose Ballerine under the colour.
Over Silk, paint the tips in Cloud with a liner brush, working from each corner to the centre and capping the free edge. Two thin coats, each cured, give a milky tip that's gentler than bright white. Place two or three little daisies on the smile line at one corner, overlapping the tip. For a bride, a row of micro daisies can replace the tip.
Black and white florals take the sweetness out of flowers and go with dark winter coats. Alternate Black and Cloud nails, with white brush-stroke flowers on the black and black line-art flowers on Cloud. Use an opaque white gel paint, since milky whites turn grey over black, and keep a separate brush for white, as any black left in the bristles tints it.
Gold centres turn white flowers into an evening design for a Valentine's dinner or a wedding. Paint and cure white brush-stroke flowers over Black or Silk. With a dotting tool, set a bead of B030 Or Solaire, a builder gel with golden reflections, in each centre. Being thicker than gel polish, it stays domed. Cure, and trace top coat around each bead before sealing.
Pressed flower nails seal dried flowers or decals in clear builder gel and show best on longer nails. Trim tiny dried flowers made for nail art to sit a millimetre clear of the cuticle and sidewalls. Over cured Rose Ballerine, brush on a thin layer of B025 Poussière De Diamant, a transparent builder gel with a subtle shimmer. Press the flower into it with tweezers and cure.
Cover the whole nail with a second layer, building a slight apex so the flower is fully enclosed, and cure. If you can still feel an edge, add another thin layer, as exposed edges catch and lift. Finish with Diamond Top Coat, capping the free edge.

Raised 3D flowers can catch, so keep them to one or two accent nails. Place each between the cuticle and the centre, no wider than half the nail. On a cured Cloud base, set a bead of Rose Ballerine where a petal's outer edge will be, press a detail brush dampened with gel cleanser flat on it and draw it to the centre. Make five petals, curing each before the next so they stay separate, then add a bead of Poussière De Diamant in the middle, cure and seal. Our 3D nail art guide shows how to stop raised petals catching.
Daisies, cherry blossom, line-art flowers, floral French tips and pressed flowers are among the best-known floral designs. Our spring nail designs add more seasonal ideas.
Dot five white petals in a ring with a dotting tool or hairgrip, cure, then add a yellow centre with a toothpick, cure and seal. Our simple nail designs for beginners use the same dots for hearts and smiley faces.
Yes, if they're dried flowers made for nail art, fully sealed in clear builder gel. Fresh flowers hold moisture and won't lie flat.
Near-black shades can make veins and age spots more noticeable, and chalky pastels can leave skin looking tired. A glossy light nude such as Silk with small flowers is kinder, and a thin layer of Rose Ballerine underneath smooths any ridges.
Silk and Cloud are in our gel polish collection, and the gels for pressed and 3D flowers in our builder gel range.
