How to Remove Gel Polish Safely at Home

, 2 min reading time

What You’ll Need

  • Nail file (preferably 180 grit)
  • Acetone
  • Cotton balls or cotton pads
  • Aluminum foil (pre-cut into small squares)
  • Cuticle pusher or orangewood stick
  • Cuticle oil (optional but highly recommended)
  • Hand moisturizer

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: File the Top Layer

Gently file the top shiny layer of the gel polish using a nail file. The goal is to break the seal on the top coat to help the acetone penetrate better. File just enough to remove the shine.

Step 2: Soak the Cotton in Acetone

Pour some acetone onto cotton balls or pads until they are completely saturated. For best results, use 100% acetone as it will work faster than regular nail polish remover.

Step 3: Wrap Each Nail

Place the acetone-soaked cotton on each nail, then wrap the nail in a small square of aluminum foil to secure the cotton in place. Repeat for all fingers.

Step 4: Let It Soak

Allow the acetone-soaked cotton to sit on your nails for 10-15 minutes. This step is crucial for breaking down the gel polish, so resist the urge to peel or scrape before this time is up.

Step 5: Remove the Foil and Cotton

After 10-15 minutes, gently remove the foil and cotton. At this point, the gel polish should appear soft and may even start flaking off.

Step 6: Gently Push Off the Gel Polish

Using a cuticle pusher or orangewood stick, gently push off the gel polish. Start from the base of the nail and move toward the tip, applying gentle pressure. Avoid scraping hard, as this can damage your natural nail.

Step 7: Repeat if Necessary

If some gel polish remains, repeat the soaking process on those nails for another 5-10 minutes. Avoid forcing or scraping, as this can weaken your nails.

Step 8: Nourish Your Nails

Once all the polish is removed, wash your hands thoroughly to remove any acetone residue. Apply cuticle oil to rehydrate and strengthen your nails, followed by a hand moisturizer to soothe your skin.

Extra Tips for Healthier Nails

  • Limit gel polish removal frequency: Frequent application and removal of gel polish can cause your nails to weaken over time. Consider taking short breaks between applications to let your nails breathe.
  • Use high-quality acetone: Using salon-grade acetone can reduce drying and speed up the removal process.
  • Moisturize regularly: Acetone can be drying, so keep up with cuticle oil and hand creams after each removal to maintain nail health.
