Grey nails go with almost everything in a winter wardrobe, from navy and camel to black and denim. The right grey depends on your undertone: blue-greys flatter pink undertones, green-greys suit olive and golden skin, and greige and charcoal work on most skin tones.

This guide covers choosing your grey, 10 grey nail designs with the steps to recreate them, and how to stop pale greys streaking.

How to choose a grey nail colour for your skin tone

Most greys have an undertone, a hint of beige, brown, blue, violet or green. As with nudes, the most flattering grey matches your own undertone, and our guide to finding your nude shade shows how to check it.

Greige and warm greys

Greige, a blend of grey and beige, sits between the greys and the nudes, so it suits most skin tones. It's the safest grey for warm and olive skin, because the beige stops it turning ashy, and green-greys flatter the same undertones. If greige still seems too grey on you, a taupe such as 015 Taupe brings in more brown.

Cool greys

Cool greys, such as slate, steel and lilac grey, lean blue or violet. They flatter pink undertones on fair and deep skin alike and pair best with silver, navy and black, though they can make olive skin seem sallow.

Light grey vs dark grey nails

Light greys sit well on fair and medium skin, but a very pale, opaque grey can turn chalky on deep skin, where a mid grey works better. Charcoal suits almost every skin tone, giving fair skin crisp contrast and deep skin a softer, tonal finish.

10 grey nail designs for autumn and winter

1. Greige nails for the office

Greige is the most practical grey for work, because small chips and a little regrowth are hard to spot on a pale neutral. It goes with a navy suit as easily as with a grey jumper. We'd choose 011 Pearl, a grey-beige with a pearly tone, finished with a glossy top coat.

2. Misty green-grey nails

A green-grey goes with the khaki, camel and cream already in most winter wardrobes. Wear 006 Foggy, a muted green-grey, on its own or as an accent on the ring fingers of a greige set. Shades this muted can shift between daylight and indoor lighting, so check a painted swatch by a window before you commit.

3. Short grey nails

A stone grey such as 007 Granite suits short nails on busy hands, because tip wear is harder to spot on grey than on black or navy. File the nails into a soft square, or round them to echo the curve of your cuticle, and keep one or two millimetres of free edge.

If your nails split before they reach your fingertips, use B013 Sable Rose instead: as a warm grey builder gel, it strengthens the nail and adds the colour. Keep the overlay thin, with a slight apex at the centre, and remove it by filing, as with all builder gel.

4. Dark grey and charcoal nails

Charcoal stops just short of black and is easier to wear if black feels harsh on fair skin. Because dark pigment blocks more of the lamp's light, keep both coats thin: a thick coat can wrinkle on top and stay soft underneath.

For December evenings, add a fine silver glitter gel to the ring fingers and seal it under top coat. A matte top coat gives charcoal a finish like wool felt, though it marks sooner than gloss. Our winter nail colours and ideas include more deep shades.

5. Grey French tip nails

A grey tip gives the French manicure a cooler, wintry feel, and it hides small wobbles better than white. For a base that also strengthens the nail, use a greige builder gel such as B012 Galet de la Riviera; our step-by-step builder gel guide shows how.

Once the base is cured, filed and free of dust, draw the tip in Granite with a fine liner brush, working from each corner towards the centre. Keep it to a millimetre or two on short nails and go deeper on long almond nails. Clean up any wobble with a flat brush dipped in cleanser, then cure and seal with top coat. Freehand tips take practice, so paint a few swatches first.

6. Grey and pale pink nails

Grey and pale pink make a gentle pairing for a winter wedding or the office. The simplest version alternates them, with grey on the thumb, middle and little fingers and pink on the others. Stone-grey Granite gives more contrast against the pink, while grey-beige Pearl keeps the two closer in tone.

For a reverse half-moon, cure two thin coats of pale pink, then draw a curved grey line a couple of millimetres above the cuticle with a liner brush. Fill in from the line to the tip in two thin coats, curing each one, so a pink crescent stays at the base. Seal with top coat.

7. Grey and white marble nails

Marble is a good first nail art design, because real stone is irregular and small mistakes become part of the pattern. Paint two or three thin coats of white, curing each one, then brush on a thin layer of clear base coat and leave it uncured. Draw a few broken, diagonal veins in Granite with a fine liner brush, letting them fork and vary in thickness. Cure after a few seconds, before they spread too far.

Add a hairline vein or two in charcoal or black, cure, and seal with top coat. Keep marble to one or two accent nails, with plain grey on the rest.

8. Grey cat eye nails with a silver beam

A silver cat eye over grey adds shine for the office party and New Year's Eve. Over two cured coats of grey, apply a thin coat of 006 Silver Moon and cure it. Add a second coat, hold a magnet just above the nail for a few seconds without touching it, then cure straight away and seal with top coat.

The darker the grey underneath, the brighter the beam, so choose charcoal for a crisp line. Mix the bottle first, as the magnetic particles settle, and finish one nail at a time so the line stays sharp. For the other magnet techniques, see our cat eye nails guide.

9. Grey velvet nails

Velvet uses the same magnetic gel, with the magnet scattering the particles over the whole nail for a diffused shimmer. On the second coat of Silver Moon, hold the magnet near each side wall in turn, or circle it slowly above the nail. Cure, then seal with top coat. With no line to place, velvet is the most forgiving cat eye technique, and it suits short, rounded nails, which have little room for a sharp beam.

10. Grey pearl chrome nails

Pearl powder gives grey an iridescent sheen, a little like the inside of a shell. The base shows through, so a pale grey gives a near-white pearl and a mid grey a silvery, moonstone finish.

Cure two coats of grey, then apply and cure a thin layer of a no-wipe top coat such as Diamond Top Coat. While it's still warm, rub a little pearl powder over the nail with a silicone or sponge applicator until it's evenly glazed. Dust off every loose speck and wipe the tip and sidewalls with cleanser so the seal grips, then apply top coat, cap the free edge and cure. If the powder goes on patchy, our guide to applying chrome powder explains why.

How to paint grey gel polish without streaks

Pale greys, like most pastels, rely on white pigment, so the first coat often goes on patchy. Darker greys cover faster but show every flaw at the cuticle.

  • Keep coats thin. Cure each one for the time in your gel's instructions. A pale grey may need a third thin coat, never one thick one.
  • Use fewer strokes. Float a bead of gel from cuticle to tip in three strokes, then let it level for a few seconds. Reworking gel that has started to settle drags it into streaks.
  • Keep a clean line. Leave a hairline gap at the cuticle and wipe any gel off the skin before curing. Gel on skin causes lifting, and uncured gel on skin is the main cause of gel allergy.
  • Cap the free edge. Run the brush along the tip with every layer, since wear there shows quickly on dark greys.
  • Finish with shine. A cream grey can seem flat once cured, and a high-shine top coat such as Diamond Top Coat brings back its depth.

Frequently asked questions

Are grey nails in style?

Yes, grey comes back every autumn and winter, and greige is now worn all year round. For a more current take, add a finish such as a silver cat eye, velvet or pearl chrome.

Is grey a good nail colour?

Yes, grey goes with almost any outfit, as long as the undertone suits your skin. If a cool grey drains your hands, greige or a green-grey will usually sit better.

What colours go with grey nails?

Grey nails go with black, navy, camel, white and denim, and with silver or gold jewellery. On the nails, grey pairs well with white marble, pale pink, a silver cat eye and, in winter, a burgundy accent nail.

What is the difference between greige and taupe?

Greige is grey mixed with beige, a light neutral that works with silver and gold. Taupe is grey mixed with brown, so it's usually deeper and earthier, and at its best with gold.

Do grey nails suit older hands?

Yes, especially a mid greige or a warm grey. Very pale greys can wash out the skin, and very dark ones draw the eye to dry cuticles. A rubber base or a thin builder gel overlay also smooths the ridges that often come with age.

Compare more greys in our gel polish collection, then add strength with our builder gel range or a silver beam from our cat eye shades.
