Vacation Nails: 12 Beach and Holiday Nail Ideas, Plus How to Make Them Last
Turquoise, coral, sea-glass green or a sunset fade: 12 beach nail ideas with the shades and techniques we'd use, and the prep that helps gel hold up on holiday.

Vacation nails have to cope with salt water, chlorine, sunscreen and sand, usually with no nail lamp to hand. The manicures that hold up best are done a few days before departure, on a strong base, kept short and sealed at every edge.
Below, we cover that preparation, then 12 beach nail ideas with the shades we'd use and who each suits.
At home, a well-prepped gel manicure often lasts several weeks. A beach holiday is harder on it, mainly because of water: in the sea or the pool, the nail absorbs water and expands slightly, then contracts as it dries, working the gel loose at the edges. Sheer and very pale shades show wear soonest, from lifting to stains.
Do your nails two or three days before you leave. Poor prep usually shows as lifting within a day or two, so you can still remove and reapply that nail, and there's little regrowth by the time you arrive. Clear every trace of cuticle from the nail plate, as gel lifts wherever it sits on skin; our guide to how long gel polish lasts covers the other causes.
If you'll swim most days, a rubber base such as RB01 Rubber Base Transparent gives more support than a standard base coat. Apply a thin coat, then a slightly thicker one that levels into a smooth, flexible layer, curing each.
A builder gel overlay is stronger still, and a coloured builder, as in ideas 4 and 6, replaces the colour coats. It takes practice and has to be filed off, so plan its removal for after the trip.
Long nails act as levers, so file them to just past the fingertip and soften the corners. Keep each coat thin and cure it for the time in your gel's instructions, as a thick coat can stay soft underneath and lift. Cap the free edge with every layer, finishing with Diamond Top Coat, a high-shine, no-wipe top coat.
Stop a hairline short of the cuticle and sidewalls, and clean any gel off the skin before curing. Gel on skin causes lifting, and uncured gel on skin is the main cause of gel allergy: if the skin around your nails turns red, itchy or swollen, stop using gel and see a doctor.
Pack cuticle oil and a small 180-grit file. Rinse your hands in fresh water after swimming, and oil the skin around your nails every evening, as salt, chlorine and sun dry it out.
If a corner chips or lifts, file the rough edge so it can't catch, then leave it alone. Picking at it tears away layers of natural nail, and sealing the edge with glue or top coat can trap water and lead to infection. Once you're home, have a fresh manicure, or an infill for builder gel and rubber base.
The first ideas are the simplest; later ones involve blending, powder or freehand art.

For ocean blue nails, a light-to-mid blue is the practical choice on a trip, as regrowth is less obvious than on navy. We'd choose 091 Azure, a soft, luminous blue that flatters medium and olive skin. Build it in two or three thin coats, curing each; for deeper blues, see our blue nail designs.

Our turquoise, 092 Lagoon, is a clear blue-green that's most flattering on warm, olive and deep skin. Regrowth shows early against such a strong colour, so for a long trip, wear it as a French tip over a sheer nude.
Paint the tip with a fine liner brush, holding the brush still and turning the finger to follow the curve, then cap the free edge and cure. A second pass along the same line, cured again, evens out the colour.
Coral warms up almost every skin tone. If you turn pink rather than brown in the sun, choose a coral with a pink lean, such as 004 Coral Pink, as orange corals make redness more obvious. Corals are often semi-sheer, so build two or three thin coats, capping the free edge each time, since chips show clearly on bright shades. For salmon and peach, see our coral and peach nail ideas.
White gives the strongest contrast with a tan, especially on medium and deep skin. It's also quick to stain, as self-tan and some sunscreens can leave a yellowish tint, so wipe your nails after applying them. For extra strength, replace the colour coats with B027 Blanc Meije, a frosted white builder gel: a thin layer, then a fuller one with a gentle apex, each cured.
The frosted green of sea glass is a gentle alternative for anyone who finds turquoise too loud. Our closest shade is 100 Mint, a fresh, velvety green that goes with silver jewellery and navy. Roll the bottle to mix it, as shaking adds bubbles, then build two thin layers, curing each.
A sandy or rosy nude keeps regrowth discreet, so it's the safest choice for a long trip. Build four nails in B035 Champagne, a rose champagne builder gel, and the ring finger in B030 Or Solaire, a builder gel with a golden reflection. The pair suits warm and olive skin and carries over to a smart dinner or a wedding abroad.
Skittle nails put a different shade on each finger, so you can wear several beach colours with no blending or line work. Run from Lagoon on the thumb through Azure, Mint and Coral Pink to a yellow on the little finger, lining the bottles up first so both hands match.
A sunset ombre fades from pale yellow or peach at the cuticle into Coral Pink at the tip, so new growth is hard to spot.
Over a cured coat of the pale shade, brush more of it over the cuticle half and Coral Pink over the tip. Blend the join with a small flat brush in short side-to-side strokes, wiping it often, then cure and blend a second layer. Blending takes practice, so work on one or two nails at a time.
Pearl powder over pale pink recreates the sheen inside a seashell and suits any age or nail length. Start from a smooth overlay of Champagne, since powder exaggerates any unevenness. Rub the powder onto a cured layer of Diamond Top Coat with a silicone applicator, then dust off the excess and wipe the edges of the nail clean. A second coat, capped over the free edge and cured, seals it in.
Simple wavy lines are easier than a curling, breaking wave, since a slight wobble still reads as water. Over a cured white or nude base, pull two or three curved lines across the tip with a long liner brush: Lagoon, then Azure, then white gel polish for the foam. Rest your little finger on the table to steady your hand, and cure after each colour so the lines stay crisp.
A tiny motif on one or two nails is the easiest beach design to wear back at work. Over a sheer nude base, place a dot of Coral Pink or yellow near the tip with a dotting tool, cure, and add short rays with a liner brush for a sun. A palm is a black silhouette: a slightly curved trunk topped with four or five tapering fronds.
Large leaves need space and a steady hand, so tropical nails suit longer nails; on a short holiday set, keep to a single leaf on each ring finger. Over a cured white or nude base, paint a curved stem diagonally in deep green, then long strokes of Mint on each side, shorter towards the tip of the leaf. Cure, add a few fine deep-green lines for shadow and cure again.
Toes are on show all holiday in sandals, and since toenails grow more slowly, a gel pedicure often lasts longer than the manicure. Your feet can take the brighter shade, such as Lagoon or Coral Pink with Champagne or Azure on the hands; our guide to the gel pedicure at home explains the method.
Clear, bright colours stand out best in strong sunlight and against a tan: turquoise, sea blues, coral and white. Muted shades such as greige tend to appear flat in that light.
Blend a sandy nude at the cuticle into Lagoon at the tip with a small flat brush, as for the sunset ombre, and cure. Then draw a thin, slightly irregular line of white gel polish along the join for the foam, cure and seal with top coat.
Beach colours change slowly, and sea blues, coral and white return every summer. Rather than chase a new colour each year, update a familiar one with a new finish, such as pearl powder over Azure.
Warm, clear shades such as coral, rosy pink and peachy nudes flatter most mature hands by adding warmth. Very dark shades make veins and age spots more noticeable, and chalky pastels can dull the skin. A short oval shape, a glossy finish and daily cuticle oil matter as much as the colour.
