Best Gel Top Coat for Nail Techs: No-Wipe, Wipe or Matte, and How to Choose

No-wipe, wipe or matte? The criteria that make a gel top coat worth stocking in the salon, how to apply it for maximum shine, and how to fix common problems.

For most nail techs, the best gel top coat is a no-wipe one. It cures to a high shine with no sticky layer, so you skip the cleanse at the end of every set and don't risk dulling the finish with a wipe. Beyond that, look for four things: a thin texture that levels without pooling, a fast cure under LED, a flexible film that resists chips and scratches, and a formula without HEMA. Keep a matte top coat for effects, and choose a top coat you can buy in salon packs, because it's the product you use on every single client.

Our pick

Bottle of Elegelli Diamond Top Coat

Diamond Top Coat

A no-wipe gel top coat with a mirror-like finish from the very first application. Its ultra-thin crystal texture enhances colour without altering its tone, its flexible film resists shocks, scratches and peeling, and it cures in 60 seconds under LED or 120 seconds under UV. HEMA-free, and designed to stay glossy for up to 3 weeks.

No-wipe, wipe or matte: which gel top coat?

All gel top coats seal and protect the colour underneath. What changes is the surface they leave after curing, and the step that follows.

No-wipe top coat Wipe top coat Matte top coat
After curing Glossy, with no sticky layer Glossy under a sticky layer Velvety, non-shiny finish
Final step None: the set is finished Wipe off the sticky layer with a cleanser Depends on the formula
Risk Few; dulls if wiped with alcohol Streaks or a dull patch if the wipe is uneven Shows scratches and marks more than gloss
Best for Everyday sets, speed, maximum shine Techs who prefer a cleansing step Effects and contrast designs

For a salon, no-wipe saves a step on every client and removes the most common cause of a dull finish: an uneven wipe. Our guide to gel base coats and top coats explains what each layer does in more detail.

Which gel top coat do salons use?

Most salons work with a no-wipe top coat for everyday sets, because it's faster and gives a consistent shine from one client to the next. They buy it in packs: a top coat goes on every manicure, every pedicure and every builder gel overlay, so it runs out faster than any colour.

Diamond Top Coat comes in a 3-pack and a 6-pack for salons, so you can keep a bottle open at each desk and a spare in the drawer.

How to apply a gel top coat for maximum shine

  1. Prep the nail. Push back the cuticles and shape the nails with a file.
  2. Apply the base. A thin layer of base, cured under the LED lamp. Rubber Base RB01, for example, cures in 60 seconds under LED.
  3. Apply the colour. One or two thin coats of gel polish, each cured for 60 seconds under the LED lamp. A light nude like 017 Silk shows how much a good top coat changes the finish.
  4. Apply the top coat thinly. Brush on an even layer of Diamond Top Coat, keep it off the skin and the sidewalls, and cap the free edge.
  5. Cure. 60 seconds under LED or 120 seconds under UV.
  6. Don't wipe. There's no sticky layer to remove. Apply cuticle oil and the set is finished.

The same top coat seals a builder gel overlay such as B003 Milky White: our builder gel guide shows where it fits in the sequence.

Gel top coat problems, and how to fix them

  • Dull after curing. The layer may be too thin to level, under-cured, or wiped with alcohol. A no-wipe top coat doesn't need a wipe.
  • Still sticky. Either it's a wipe top coat, or it's under-cured: check that your lamp suits the gel and that you cure for the full time.
  • Wrinkles or ripples. The layer is too thick. Apply a thinner coat and cure.
  • Peeling at the tip. The free edge wasn't capped. Brush the top coat along the edge of the nail before curing.
  • Losing shine before the infill. Harsh hand washing products and solvents can dull any top coat. Ask clients to wear gloves for cleaning.

For gel that lifts or peels rather than losing its shine, see our guide to how long gel polish lasts.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a difference between top coat and gel top coat?

Yes. A regular top coat air-dries over nail polish. A gel top coat cures under a UV or LED lamp into a hard, glossy film, and it's made to seal gel polish or builder gel. They aren't interchangeable.

Which gel top coat is the glossiest?

Look for a no-wipe top coat with a thin texture, applied in an even layer and cured fully. Diamond Top Coat gives an intense mirror-like finish from the very first application, with no wipe that could dull it.

What do I use to wipe a gel top coat?

Nothing, if it's a no-wipe top coat: it has no sticky layer after curing. A wipe top coat needs a cleanser on a lint-free pad to remove its sticky layer.

Why is my gel top coat turning yellow?

Yellowing can come from the formula, from under-curing, or from contact with products like self-tanner, hair dye or certain cleaning products. Cure fully, and seal pale shades with a top coat known to stay clear.

What gel top coats do nail salons use?

Mostly no-wipe top coats bought in packs, because they're faster and give the same shine on every client. Diamond Top Coat comes in packs of 3, 6 and 9 for salons.

Can you use a gel top coat over builder gel?

Yes. Once the builder is cured and refined, a gel top coat seals it and gives the final shine, exactly as it does over gel polish. Apply it thinly, cap the free edge and cure.

How long does a gel top coat stay glossy?

It depends on the formula and on how clients use their hands. Diamond Top Coat is designed to stay glossy for up to 3 weeks. Harsh cleaning products and solvents dull any top coat faster.
