Nail Technician Equipment: The Complete Checklist for Beginners (2026)
Workstation, hygiene, tools, lamp, e-file, prep, bases, colours and top coat: the complete equipment list for new nail technicians, and what can wait.

Every nail technician remembers their first desk: a lamp, a few bottles, a borrowed file and a lot of enthusiasm. The temptation, when you start, is to buy everything at once. The better approach is to invest in a few well-chosen essentials, learn to master them, and let your equipment grow with your clientele.
Here is the complete list of what a new nail technician really needs in 2026, from the workstation to the finishing touch, with the products we recommend and the ones you can add later.
Your desk is where you will spend your days, so think comfort first. A stable table at the right height, a chair that supports your back, a padded arm rest for your client and plenty of light. Daylight is ideal; otherwise, a daylight lamp shows colours as they really are. Keep a stack of clean towels, a small bin within reach and, if you file a lot, a dust extractor to keep the air clean.
This is the part clients notice without saying so. Plan for disposable gloves, a surface and tool disinfectant, lint-free wipes, and single-use files and buffers or tools you can properly clean and disinfect between clients. A tidy, visibly clean desk builds trust from the very first appointment. Check the hygiene rules that apply to nail salons in your country.
A few good tools will last for years: a stainless steel cuticle pusher, cuticle nippers, files in two grits (a coarser one to shape, a finer one for the natural nail), a soft buffer, a dust brush and orange sticks for clean-up. Add a few fine brushes for gel and nail art as your services grow.

No gel service without it. Choose a lamp large enough for the whole hand and thumb, with a timer, and check that it cures the gels you use. It is worth investing in a reliable model: an under-cured gel is the cause of many problems, from lifting to sensitivity.
An e-file is not compulsory on day one, but it quickly becomes indispensable: it makes gel removal, shaping and refills faster and more precise, and it saves your wrists. The Elegelli Professional Cordless Nail Drill has a brushless motor up to 45,000 RPM and a battery that lasts a full working day. Our guide to choosing a nail drill explains what to look for.

Good prep is the secret of every manicure that lasts. Two products do the work: Prep Booster, which cleanses and dehydrates the nail plate, and Acid-Free Primer, which creates the bond between the natural nail and the gel without harsh acids.

Start with a reliable base for gel polish manicures, such as the Classic Base Coat Pack, and a clear rubber base like RB01 Rubber Base Transparent to strengthen soft natural nails. Add one or two builder gels for structure and length; B003 Milky White is the most requested finish. Our guide to strengthening natural nails explains when to use each.

You do not need a hundred shades to start. Build a core palette of about ten colours that cover most requests: two or three nudes, a milky white, a soft pink, a classic red, a bordeaux, a black and a seasonal shade. For a first set, the Discovery Kit combines a base, a colour and a top coat. When your salon grows, the 90 Gel Colours Bundle gives you the full range at once.

It is the product you will use on every single client, so buy it in quantity. Diamond Top Coat gives a mirror shine and protects the colour; the Diamond Top Coat Pack keeps you stocked.

Nail art foils, stamping plates, dozens of glitters, a second lamp: they are fun, but they can wait until you know what your clients ask for. Invest first in what you use at every appointment: prep, base, top coat, a good lamp and good tools.
