Chrome Nails: How to Apply Chrome Powder, Plus 12 Chrome Nail Designs
How chrome powder turns gel into a mirror, how to seal it so the tips don't chip, and 12 chrome nail designs, from silver and gold to pearl glaze and powder-free metallics.

Chrome nails get their mirror finish from an ultra-fine powder, rubbed onto a cured no-wipe top coat until the nail reflects light like polished metal. Change the powder or the base colour and the same technique produces anything from bright silver to a pale pearl glaze.
This guide covers how chrome powder works, how to apply and seal it so it doesn't chip, the best base colours and 12 chrome nail designs, some of them powder-free.
Chrome nail powder is made of metallic or pearl flakes as fine as talc. Rubbed onto a smooth, cured gel surface, the flakes lie flat and reflect light together, like a thin sheet of metal. Mirror powders in silver, gold and rose gold are the most opaque, while pearl and aurora powders are translucent and let the base colour show through.
The best surface is a no-wipe top coat: it cures glossy, with no sticky layer, so the powder burnishes to a mirror. If your top coat leaves a sticky layer, wipe it off with a cleanser first, or the powder will clump and turn grainy.
Besides your gel kit and nail lamp, you'll need chrome powder, a silicone or sponge-tipped applicator, a fluffy brush and lint-free wipes.
Grainy, dull patches mean the powder landed on a sticky or dusty surface, or the applicator was overloaded. Bare streaks need more pressure and a few more passes. If the powder won't grip at all, the top coat has probably cooled: add another thin layer, cure and start again.
Chrome also magnifies every ridge underneath, so keep the colour coats thin and level, and smooth ridged nails with a rubber base first. A slight loss of shine under the seal is normal; a dull finish means the seal was too thick or the brush dragged through the flakes.
The base colour changes the result almost as much as the powder itself.

Silver chrome over black is the full, liquid-metal mirror most people picture. Burnish the powder until no black shows through, checking it from several angles for dull spots. It flatters cool undertones and goes with silver jewellery, and on short, rounded nails it's easy to wear by day.
Gold chrome suits warm, olive and tanned skin. Rubbed over black, the powder turns a deep gold for evenings, while a warm nude underneath makes it lighter, closer to champagne. On an accent nail, B030 Or Solaire, a builder gel with golden reflections, adds a softer metallic gold without powder. Our New Year's Eve nail ideas show more ways to wear gold.
Sometimes called white chrome, pearl chrome is an iridescent pearl powder rubbed over a milky base for a shell-like sheen. Use two coats of 021 Cloud, a sheer milky white, for a translucent base, or three for a denser white. It's a good match for weddings, with pearls, lace and ivory, and milky shades hide regrowth better than bright ones.
Glazed nails are the subtlest way to wear chrome: pearl powder over a sheer nude, so the nail gleams without appearing metallic. One or two thin nude coats, with the natural nail showing through, give the glaze its depth. It suits the office and short nails, and it's the most forgiving chrome for beginners, as an uneven glaze barely shows.
A chrome French tip keeps the nail natural and puts all the shine on the edge. Over a sheer nude finished with cured no-wipe top coat, paint the tip in the same top coat with a fine liner brush. It's clear, so tilt the finger under the light to see the line. Cure, press the powder onto the tip straight away with a small applicator, and wipe any haze off the rest of the nail before sealing.
A freehand smile line takes practice, so start with a micro tip on short nails, using the line technique in our French manicure guide.
On short nails, a square shape gives chrome a crisp outline, and the short free edge takes fewer knocks, so the tips last longer. Round off the corners slightly, as sharp corners catch and break the seal. In pearl or pale gold, short square chrome nails are discreet enough for work.
Pink chrome ranges from a sheer glaze, with pearl powder over pale pink, to full metallic rose, with rose gold powder over a mid-pink. Cool, bluish pinks flatter fair skin with pink undertones, and rose gold works best on warm ones. For a powder-free pink, B035 Champagne is a rose champagne builder gel that adds strength as well as colour.
On long almond nails, add fine silver mirror details over the rose chrome, such as a line along each sidewall or a swirl near the tip. Seal and cure the rose chrome, then paint the design in no-wipe top coat, cure it and press on silver powder, as for the French tip.

Blue chrome doesn't need a blue powder: silver rubbed lightly over navy makes a steely blue metal, a good winter alternative to plain silver. For an electric blue, use a blue chrome powder over black; for an icy version, rub pearl powder over a pale blue.
Aurora powder is iridescent, flashing pink, blue, green or gold depending on the angle and the powder. A black base makes the colour shift dark, like an oil slick, and milky white softens it into a pastel, opal-like shimmer. The effect shows best in sunlight, so it comes into its own on holiday. The powder-free alternative is B034 Prisme Holographique, a holographic builder gel that reflects several colours at once.
A single chrome line adds metal to a nude or milky manicure without taking it over. Paint it like the French tip, in no-wipe top coat, with a long striper brush for straight lines or a short liner for curves. A vertical line down the centre is easiest; a curve along the cuticle must stay a hair's width from the skin. For more placements, see our gel nail art ideas.
If you'd rather avoid powder, or your nails need strength as well as shine, a metallic builder gel gives colour and structure in one product. Of the two silvers, B033 Argent Sterling has the stronger shimmer and B028 Éclat Céleste the more discreet one. Expect a soft metallic sheen instead of a mirror, with no powder layer to peel at the tips.

Apply it like any builder gel, building a gentle apex in thin, cured layers. Wipe off any sticky layer, file the surface smooth and seal with Diamond Top Coat. Our guide to using builder gel covers each step.
Cat eye gel polish adds a band of light that moves as you turn your hand. Over one cured coat of black, 006 Silver Moon gives a cool silver beam. Cure a first thin coat, brush on a second and hold the magnet just above it for a few seconds, then cure straight away, before the particles drift. Where you hold the magnet shapes the beam, as our cat eye nails guide shows.
To combine both effects, rub a sheer pearl or aurora powder over the cured no-wipe top coat. The beam stays visible under the glaze, whereas an opaque silver powder would hide it.
Chrome gives a gel manicure a metallic or pearly reflection. The powder sits between two layers of top coat, so it never touches the natural nail and adds no strength. To take it off, file through the top coat and chrome, then remove the gel underneath as usual.
Chrome lasts as long as the gel underneath, usually two to three weeks on healthy nails. Wear shows first at the tips, so a well-sealed free edge makes the biggest difference.
Chrome looks best on black if you want a true mirror in silver or gold, and on milky or nude bases for pearl and glazed finishes. Silver powder goes with cool undertones, gold with warm ones, and pearl with almost every skin tone.
Not with chrome powder. It has to be rubbed onto a hard, cured gel top coat, while regular polish stays soft for hours and smudges under the applicator. Without gel, the closest option is a metallic nail polish.
Usually because loose powder was left on the free edge, so the sealing coat had nothing firm to grip there. Clearing the tip, dusting off every speck and capping the edge with each coat prevents most chipping.
