Classy Nails: 15 Elegant Nail Designs for Work, Evenings and Weddings
Find out what makes nails classy, from shape to shine, then pick from 15 elegant designs for the office, evenings out and weddings, each with its shade and technique.

Classy nails are well kept and understated: a tidy shape at a sensible length, a clean cuticle line, a glossy finish and one detail at most. With those basics in place, almost any colour can be elegant, from a sheer nude pink to a deep burgundy.
The rules come first, then 15 classy nail designs for work, evenings out and weddings, each with its colours and technique.
Five points matter most, and only one concerns colour.
Office nails have to survive keyboards and several weeks of regrowth. Sheer and milky shades are the most forgiving, because small chips and the gap at the cuticle barely show.
A sheer nude pink evens out the nail's colour while letting its natural tone show, and it never distracts in a meeting. On fair to medium skin, use 017 Silk, a light nude that reads as pale pink; olive and deep skin suit a warmer, beige-leaning nude. Pale shades streak under a nearly dry brush: pick up enough gel to glide, then let the thin coat settle for a few seconds before curing.

Semi-sheer milky white brightens the hands without the starkness of pure white and flatters most skin tones. Build 021 Cloud in two or three thin coats until you like the opacity. For nails that bend or peel, B003 Milky White gives a similar shade in builder gel: it adds strength, can be infilled and is removed by filing.
Because deep French tips visually shorten the nail, a micro French keeps the white under two millimetres. Over two cured coats of 017 Silk or 021 Cloud, pull white gel polish along the free edge with a long liner brush. Rest the little finger of your painting hand on the table and turn the nail rather than the brush. Sharpen the inner edge with a flat brush dampened with cleanser, then cap the free edge, cure and seal with top coat.
If pink nudes are too sweet for you and beige too yellow, switch to greige. This grey-beige flatters cool and neutral undertones and goes well with silver jewellery. A rounded almond lengthens the fingers, though it needs a few millimetres of free edge and tends to crack at the filed-in sides. A greige builder gel such as B012 Galet De La Riviera reinforces those sides.
Red suits even formal offices when the nails are short, filed to a neat oval that just clears the fingertip. If your nails are weak, a red builder gel such as B021 Rouge Capucine adds strength. Any flooding at the cuticle shows on red, so leave a narrow gap and clean the sidewalls with a small brush before curing.
Dark shades come into their own in the evening, with black dresses, velvet and wool coats. Keep every layer thin: dark pigments block more of the lamp's light, so a thick coat may not cure right through.
Burgundy is one of the easiest dark shades to wear, rich enough for the theatre and discreet enough for the office the next morning. File short square or oval shapes carefully first, because a colour this dark shows any difference between two nails. With B014 Amarante, a bordeaux builder gel, build the structure in two thin layers rather than one thick bead, and cure each fully.
For a dark manicure warmer than black, wear espresso brown. It suits warm and olive undertones, creates a rich tone-on-tone effect on deep skin, and goes with camel coats and gold jewellery. Apply 010 Coffee in two coats and finish with a high-shine top coat, since dark brown loses its depth without gloss.
Navy is a chic alternative to black. Nearly as dark at night but clearly blue by day, it works from the office to dinner, especially with silver or white gold. For more colour, choose 113 Sapphire, a saturated gemstone blue brighter than navy. Wipe the brush well on the neck of the bottle, as dark blue that floods the cuticle smears when cleaned off.
Black tips give the French manicure a sharper, more graphic edge. Over a light base such as 017 Silk, keep the tip about two millimetres deep, with both ends of the smile line level. If freehand lines are hard, brush black gel polish onto a silicone nail stamper and press the free edge into it at an angle. Tidy the smile line and clean any gel off the skin under the tip before curing. Our guide to black nail designs has more variations.
The half-moon manicure pairs a nude crescent at the base of the nail with a dark colour, so it needs medium length or more. Paint the whole nail in 017 Silk and cure. With a fine liner brush, draw a curve in 010 Coffee or 113 Sapphire about two millimetres above the cuticle, following its shape. Fill in towards the tip with a small oval brush and cap the free edge. Cure, repeat with a second coat and seal with top coat.
A wedding guest's manicure should shine in photos without upstaging the bride. Keep to one effect per hand, and do your nails two or three days ahead in case of lifting.
A blend of pink, beige and gold, champagne flatters most skin tones and matches ivory, blush or pastel outfits. Choose B035 Champagne, a rose champagne builder gel, for colour and structure in one product. After a thin cured layer, float a bead of gel over the nail and let it settle so the highest point, the apex, sits near the centre. Cure, then finish with top coat.

Brides who find white too plain can wear pearl chrome: a milky base with the sheen of mother-of-pearl. Over two cured coats of 021 Cloud, apply and cure Diamond Top Coat. Because this no-wipe top coat leaves no sticky layer, the powder buffs smooth instead of clumping. Rub in a little pearl powder with a silicone applicator and brush the excess off the sidewalls so the edges can seal. Finish with a second coat of Diamond Top Coat, capping the free edge, and cure.
Velvet is the easiest cat eye effect for beginners, as the magnet spreads the particles evenly and leaves no line to centre. On cured 017 Silk, apply a thin coat of 001 Golden Veil, a golden shimmer neutral enough for a wedding. Hold the magnet close to the uncured layer, moving it in small circles for a few seconds, and cure straight away. Repeat with a second coat, then seal with top coat; our cat eye nails guide covers other magnet techniques.
A single fine gold line over nude, burgundy or navy echoes your rings and earrings. Draw it with gold liner gel and a long, fine brush, just above the cuticle or along the tip, then cure and seal with top coat. Gold striping tape is easier for beginners: trim it just short of the edge so it can't lift, and seal it under two layers of top coat. For more gold, cover one accent nail in B030 Or Solaire, a golden builder gel.
One small crystal on the ring finger of a nude or milky manicure catches the light without competing with your jewellery. On the cured colour, place a bead of thick clear gel near the base of the nail, well clear of the skin. Press a flat-back stone of two to three millimetres into it with a wax pencil and cure. Seal the nail and the stone's base with top coat, keeping it off the facets so the sparkle stays sharp, and cure.
Luxury nails are mostly down to preparation and finishing.
Classy nails are understated, well-kept manicures. They are usually short to medium, filed to an oval, almond or rounded square, and finished in nude, milky white or a dark colour with a high gloss.
Sheer nude pink and milky white are the classiest everyday colours, as they suit any setting and make regrowth less obvious. Red, burgundy, espresso brown and navy are just as elegant on short, glossy nails.
They can be, if the length stays in proportion to your hands and the shape is a rounded oval or almond. Very long stiletto or coffin shapes come across as fashion nail art.
Short to medium nails in one neutral or dark colour suit almost any workplace, from nude pink to short red nails. Healthcare and food jobs often ban nail polish, gel and extensions outright, so check your employer's rules first.
Yes, short nails are often the classiest choice. File them to a short oval or rounded square, keep the cuticle line clean and choose a pale nude, milky white, or glossy burgundy or navy.
