Glitter Nails: 12 Sparkly Nail Ideas and How to Make Glitter Last
From a clear shimmer for the office to full glitter for the party season: twelve glitter nail designs, and the gel technique that keeps the sparkle smooth and sealed.

Glitter nails are one of the most forgiving gel finishes: scattered flakes hide small chips and tip wear far better than a flat cream colour. Worn as a clear shimmer, a glitter tip or one accent nail, they're discreet enough for the office.
This guide explains how shimmer, glitter and holographic finishes differ and how to apply glitter gel smoothly. It then covers 12 designs, from the office to the party season, and safe removal.
Sparkly nails come in four main finishes.
To do glitter nails with gel, dab thin coats of glitter over a cured base and cure each one. Then bury the texture under clear gel and seal it with top coat.
With a glitter builder gel, keep steps 1, 2, 5 and 8. In between, use the usual builder method: a thin slip layer, cured, then a bead floated into a gentle apex and cured again. Our guide on how to use builder gel covers the apex in detail.
The quietest sparkly nails are clear, letting the natural pink of the nail bed show through. A gentle apex of B025 Poussière De Diamant, a transparent builder gel with subtle shimmer, also protects weak or bendy nails as they grow. The finish passes the strictest office dress code, and regrowth barely shows before an infill.
Glitter French tips hide an uneven smile line better than white ones, as stray flakes blend in. Over cured sheer pink gel polish, outline the smile line in silver or gold glitter gel with a small flat brush, then dab glitter in to fill the tip. Curve the line to mirror your cuticle, keep the band narrow on short nails and cap the free edge with every layer.
A glitter ombre fades from dense sparkle at the tip to almost nothing near the cuticle. With no line to keep straight, it's beginner-friendly. Dab glitter over the outer half of the nail and blur the edge with a few flecks from an almost dry brush. Cure, then add a second layer at the tip for depth. A reverse fade, densest at the cuticle, shows regrowth much sooner.
One holographic nail per hand lets you try the finish before committing to ten. Build the ring fingers in B034 Prisme Holographique, a multi-reflective holographic builder gel, and paint the rest in a sheer nude or milky white. Keep the builder thin so the accent sits level with its neighbours. On all ten nails it's a party set, as spotlights bring out the rainbow.
At work, a subtle silver builder gel such as B028 Éclat Céleste keeps the shine low-key while reinforcing the nail. For evenings, apply silver glitter gel over a cured mid-grey colour, which fills in between the flakes so you need fewer coats. Silver suits cool undertones and goes with silver jewellery, grey knitwear and navy tailoring.

Gold accents on a nude base flatter warm undertones and olive or deep skin, and echo gold rings and a camel coat. Choose a warm beige or caramel, as cool pink nudes can look greyish beside gold. On the thumbs and ring fingers, add fine gold glitter gel over the nude, or build those nails in B030 Or Solaire, a builder gel with a golden reflection.
Rose gold sits between gold and silver, so it works at a winter wedding where you wear both metals. Alternate B036 Rose Météore, a galactic rose builder gel, with B035 Champagne, a soft rose champagne builder gel. As both are builder gels, all ten nails can be built to the same thickness.

Shimmer over a cat eye gives two kinds of light: the magnetic beam moves under the surface while the shimmer glints on top. Hold the magnet just above the uncured cat eye coat for a few seconds, then cure straight away, one nail at a time. Float a thin layer of Poussière De Diamant on top rather than chunky glitter, which would hide the beam, then cure and seal. Our cat eye nails guide shows where to hold the magnet.
On short nails, choose fine glitter: large flakes don't lie flat on a small, curved nail, and their corners catch at the free edge. Cover the whole nail, or scatter it lightly over a nude base so your fingers seem longer. A short oval or rounded square wears best, with no sharp corners to chip.
Over two cured coats of burgundy or navy, fill a crescent at the base of the nail with gold or silver glitter gel, using a small round brush. Work from the centre outwards, leaving a hairline gap at the skin. The curve takes practice and needs some length, so it's best on medium and long nails.
Icy blue glitter fits the cold months, and a pale shade hides regrowth better than navy or black. A full set in B032 Opaline, a light blue builder gel with fine glitter, flatters fair skin with pink undertones. On olive or deep skin, it makes a fresh contrast.
For Christmas and New Year parties, glitter can cover all ten nails. Combine fine and medium glitter over a black or deep red base, so the small pieces fill the spaces between the larger ones. Bury the texture under a clear layer and two coats of top coat. Our Christmas nail ideas and New Year's Eve nail designs have more party sets in gold, silver and glitter.
Glitter gel polish takes longer to soak off than a cream colour, because the flakes and extra clear layers slow the acetone down. File off the top coat and most of the glitter first, then soak. Glitter buried under builder gel or rubber base is filed off completely.
Glitter builder gels are filed off by hand or with an e-file. For an infill, stop at a thin, even layer; for a full removal, take the last film off with a soft buffer. Never peel lifting glitter, as it pulls away layers of the natural nail. Our guide to removing gel and builder gel with an e-file explains which bit to use and when to stop.
Yes, glitter is worn all year. Fine shimmer, a glitter tip or one accent nail suits everyday wear, and full glitter comes out for the festive season.
Holographic glitter usually gives the most sparkle, as every flash of light breaks into rainbow colours. Chunky flakes give bigger flashes than fine glitter, but they're harder to smooth. Any glitter shows up best over a dark base and under a high-shine top coat.
Sheer warm nudes, rosy pinks and mid-tones such as rose or berry are usually the most flattering. Very pale or very dark shades can draw the eye to veins, age spots and ridges. For sparkle, a fine shimmer in a builder gel such as Poussière De Diamant also smooths out ridges.
About as long as any gel manicure: two to three weeks for gel polish, and three to four weeks between infills for builder gel. Sparkle doesn't shorten wear: early lifting usually comes from rushed prep, gel on the skin or an uncapped free edge.
Our builder gel collection has the shimmer, holographic and glitter shades from this guide, and our top coats seal them.
